Brooklyn, Calderón and other unlikely combinations. Directing Siglo de Oro on both sides of the Atlantic.
Meeting with Daniel Alonso at the Alicante Classical Theatre Festival 2025. The event offers a journey through centuries, languages and stages: from a comedy theatre to the Manhattan underground; because New York theatre audiences also know what it means to dream of justice, identity and honour.
Daniel Alonso is a creative director specialising in classical theatre. He has worked in New York, Washington D.C., London, Budapest, as well as throughout Spain,
exhibiting his Golden Age productions at the Almagro, Olmedo, Alcalá de Henares, Los Veranos de la Villa de Madrid and Teatros del Canal festivals, among others.
With a degree in Psychology from the Autonomous University of Madrid, his career is defined by an interdisciplinary approach that has shaped his approach to theatre. For four seasons, he was part of the National Classical Theatre Company as an actor, an experience that consolidated his connection with the great authors of the Baroque period.
In 2024, he was awarded the ATI Award in New York for Best Theatre Director and the Talía Award in New York for Best Theatre Director for his production of La Monja Alférez.
He has collaborated as a lecturer and speaker with various universities, including the Complutense University of Madrid, the European Miguel de Cervantes University, the UNED, Sagardoy Business & Law School, and the Performing Arts degree programme at the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid. His work is committed to reinterpreting classic texts with a critical eye, creative freedom and a strong connection to the present.
