THE ALICANTE TOWN HALL: A BAROQUE TREASURE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
The Town Hall of Alicante, a majestic 18th-century Baroque building, is an example of the city’s architectural splendor. With its impressive facade and its iconic “Cota Cero” located inside the building, from where heights above sea level in Spain are measured, it is a place full of history. Its interior houses works of art and rooms of great heritage value.
COTA ZERO: THE HIDDEN SECRET OF THE ALICANTE TOWN HALL
When you visit the Baroque Town Hall of Alicante, don’t miss a very special feature: the Cota Cero (Zero Level). Located on the first step of the staircase, this point marks sea level altitude. In the 19th century, engineers chose this spot because the sea level on Alicante’s coast was very stable, with minimal variations between high and low tide. This is where the NP1 marker was created, which you can still see today. We invite you to discover this historic detail. Plus, next to the Cota Cero, you’ll find a sculpture by Salvador Dali. THE DISCOVERED CITY: AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL JOURNEY THROUGH THE HISTORY OF ALICANTE
This exhibition space will take you on a journey to explore Alicante’s oldest secrets. Located beneath the modern annex of the Town Hall, it reveals archaeological remains dating from the Middle Ages to modern times. Here, you can see how the different cultures that lived in the city over the centuries left their mark. From Islamic walls to traces of 16th-century urban planning, this exhibition offers a unique glimpse into Alicante’s past and a special experience for history lovers!
