Exhibition „The Utopian Stone“ at Las Cigarreras
„The Utopian Stone“ is an audiovisual project developed from the diaries that Scottish geologist William Maclure wrote during his stay in Alicante in the 19th century. His writings link the greatest utopian experiment in history with the study of Alicante’s geology, through the construction of a series of schools based on his cooperative philosophy and on the need for universal education as a means of eradicating poverty. Maclure ultimately did not carry out his educational initiatives; however, years later, in the United States, this failure would help promote the creation of an educational centre whose methodologies would contribute to shaping part of modern public education systems.
„The Utopian Stone“ is the result of the filming, on photochemical film, of Alicante’s geology, based on the locations that Maclure recorded in his diaries, where he planned to establish his educational project.
