Astrotourism on Tabarca Island

With the aim of improving the sustainability of one of Alicante’s main tourist attractions, the Municipal Tourism Board has certified the easternmost point of Tabarca Island as a «Starlight Site».
This is a new initiative aimed at promoting the «astrotourism» product on the island. The goal is to help spread the island’s sun-and-beach tourism activity throughout the year, as it is currently concentrated in the summer months. This type of night sky observation can be enjoyed all year round, complementing the island’s tourism offering in a high-quality and respectful way.

This type of night-time observation requires spaces where there is very little light pollution. In the case of Tabarca Island, we have the advantage that on the Campo islet, at the easternmost point, there are no buildings, and the nearby urban areas, although they emit light, are farther away and therefore allow observation of the night sky.
To certify this area of the island as an ideal place for stargazing, the Municipal Tourism Board contacted the Starlight Foundation, promoted by the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics and the main advocate for the Defence of the Night Sky and the Right to Starlight. Experts from the Foundation examined the cloud cover, clarity and image quality of the island’s sky at Punta Falcón, determining that this area could be certified as a «Starlight Site».

From the point known as «Punta Falcón» on the island, it is possible to enjoy the constellations throughout all the seasons of the year: from Orion, Taurus, Auriga and Gemini in winter to Lyra, Cygnus, Aquila, Scorpio and Sagittarius in summer. The circumpolar constellations can be enjoyed every night of the year.

This designation proposes the creation of a working group to develop future educational and cultural initiatives, as well as measures to reduce light pollution in the area and the future installation of photometers to provide data on the sky background.

This represents a commitment to a new tourism offering on Tabarca Island. An offering that respects the environment and the natural and highly distinctive characteristics of our island, promoting a sustainable experience that respects the island’s natural character and tourism activity. Our visitors will be able to enjoy this unique space both in summer and winter, observing the night sky from Punta Falcón and discovering its cultural and natural attractions.
