Santa Faz Monastery

The Santa Faz Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Veronica, is one of the most significant religious landmarks in Alicante. Founded on the site where, according to tradition, the first miracle of Santa Faz occurred in 1489, this monastery houses the sacred cloth of the Face of Christ, which is believed to have miraculous properties. The current monastery church, in baroque style, underwent a significant renovation in the 18th century. It stands out for its imposing neo-baroque altarpiece on the main altar, designed by the architect Juan Vidal in the first half of the 20th century. Additionally, the monastery is the resting place of two important figures from Alicante: the composer Oscar Espla and the artist Eusebio Sempere. One of the oldest and most recognizable elements of the architectural complex is its 16th-century tower, the only structure that has survived from its original construction. Located next to the cloister, it retains ancient defensive elements.

The Santa Faz Monastery is also the epicenter of the traditional Santa Faz Pilgrimage, which attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, two Thursdays after Holy Thursday, establishing itself as a symbol of devotion, history, and tradition in Alicante.

It has nothing

The church has undergone several interventions throughout its history, being the 18th century the most important one, which gave it its current baroque style.

The monastery tower is the only vestige of the original 16th-century construction and is located on one side of the hortus courtyard, to the east of the cloister.
