Alicante Central Market

Alicante Central Market is an architectural gem from the early 20th century, located right in the heart of the city. Designed by architects Francisco Fajardo Guardiola and Juan Vidal Ramos, this eclectic building stands out for its Valencian Art Nouveau ornamentation and its imposing façade, dominated by a wide staircase.

Inaugurated in 1922, the market features a rectangular layout with a distinctive structure that uses rolled-steel pillars and trusses to achieve abundant natural light inside. Inside, three basilica-style naves house a variety of stalls offering fresh, local produce, making it the gastronomic heart of the city.

Plaza 25 de Mayo: A Remembrance Space for Life

The Plaza 25 de Mayo, also known as the Plaza de las Flores due to its flower stalls, is a vibrant space that provides access to the Market from its rear facade. This iconic square honors the memory of more than 300 people who lost their lives during the bombing of the Market on May 25th, 1938, a tragic event of the Spanish Civil War.
In the plaza, there is an emotional commemorative plaque that remembers the bombing and its victims, serving as a reminder of the value of peace and historical memory.
