San Anton Porrate
Alicante is full of tradition with the San Anton Porrate, one of its oldest and most beloved festivals. This festivity, with centuries of history, began when the farmers built a hermitage in honour of the saint in the neighbourhood that today bears his name, near the emblematic Plaza de Toros.
During the days of the Porrate there are competitions, sporting activities and the exciting ‘Descent of Galeras’, in which handcrafted wooden vehicles drive down the slope of the old Tobacco Factory, now converted into the Las Cigarreras Cultural Centre. The most eagerly awaited moment is the traditional blessing of the animals, which brings together a large crowd in the Plaza de Toros.
