We want to share some recommendations so you don’t "get burned" during the Hogueras de San Juan.
Alicante’s biggest festival, Les Fogueres de Sant Joan, is just around the corner! For several days, it’s time to have fun, meet up with friends, and fully enjoy Alicante. But don't get burned during the Hogueras.
Use Public Transportation
The city center is closed to traffic due to the setup of les Fogueres, racos, and barracas, allowing pedestrians to fully enjoy a transformed Alicante. These are special days, so embrace this unique experience.
Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself from the Sun
It’s hot, so make sure to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. Wear comfortable, light, and breathable clothing. Carry a bottle of water and drink regularly. Apply sunscreen, and it’s best to also protect your head. Mascletas take place around 2 PM, a time when crowds gather and the sun is at its strongest. Follow these tips to avoid dizziness or heat exhaustion.
Protect Your Ears During the “Mascletas”
If you attend a mascletà, be aware that the noise during these fifteen minute firework displays is not only thrilling but also deafening and potentially harmful to your ears. Sound levels can reach up to 130 decibels during the pyrotechnic explosions. Using earplugs with valves or simple techniques like chewing gum, swallowing, or keeping your mouth slightly open can help protect your ears, especially for children, who can use specially designed earplugs or protective earmuffs.
Drink in Moderation
These are days of eating, drinking, and enjoying great company. In Alicante, tradition dictates eating coca amb tonyina (a tuna-filled savory pastry) on La Planta, June 20th. This delicious treat, made with tuna belly and onions among other ingredients, is typically paired with fresh figs, which are in peak season just before San Juan. Bars and restaurants will be packed during the festivities, so be patient—and most importantly, drink responsibly. If you do, you’ll enjoy everything even more!
Hogueras de San Juan Anthem
Have fun and carry the spirit of les Fogueres with you! If you like, here’s the Official Hogueras Anthem and a ringtone you can download to keep the festival spirit right in the palm of your hand.

Feel the City
Enjoy walking through areas that are usually reserved for cars. Take a moment to admire les Fogueres and appreciate the hard work behind each one. Let yourself be carried away by the music that fills the streets.
