Gravina Museum of Fine Arts
MUBAG
Located in the iconic 18th-century Gravina Palace, this museum offers a fascinating journey through the art and history of Alicante. After a careful restoration process, the MUBAG has transformed this historic building into a modern and welcoming space for displaying works by artists connected to Alicante. The MUBAG is a place where Alicante’s history meets creativity and culture. Situated in the heart of the old town, between the Postiguet Wall and the Santa María staircase, its magnificent façade and impressive interiors invite visitors to discover the artistic treasures within. Its permanent exhibition, titled “The 19th Century: The Collection in a New Light”, showcases works by great masters like Antonio Gisbert, Joaquin Agrasot, and Emilio Sala, among others. With over 80 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, and decorative art, the exhibition provides a broad view of the themes that shaped 19th-century Spanish art, reflecting the era’s aesthetic and social evolution. In addition to its permanent collection, MUBAG hosts temporary exhibitions and organizes various educational and cultural activities.

The majestic main staircase, with its elegant ashlar stone vault, defines the spatial distribution between the noble floor and the service floor. The architectural team of the Provincial Council undertook the restoration of this building from 1998 to 2001. The Gravina Palace was merged with the adjacent structure of a similar style, creating a unified space in both its exterior appearance and interior layout. Additionally, the ground floor and basement of a more contemporary structure were incorporated, designed to host temporary exhibitions, with access from the adjacent street or the museum’s main entrance. Throughout the restoration process, preserving the original style of the Casa Palacio was prioritized, while incorporating the most innovative museographic techniques.
