5 ESSENTIAL PLANS TO ENJOY AUTUMN IN ALICANTE
Autumn arrives and the city of Alicante embraces its charms with milder temperatures and plenty to explore. Routes that combine the sea and historical heritage, internationally renowned exhibitions, festivals and cultural events await you in the city of light par excellence.
1. Autumn walks between history and the sea
To enjoy the colours of the season, Alicante has a sustainable and accessible 1.2-kilometre route, essential for enjoying the Mediterranean, known as The La Cantera Greenway, which transforms the former historic route of the “Trenet” into a spectacular pedestrian trail, offering unrivalled views of Alicante Bay: a unique coastal walk that recovers the city’s railway heritage. And if you are passionate about archaeology, you should continue your route to the new coastal park at La Almadraba Beach.
This newly opened green lung combines nature, relaxation and an extremely important historical heritage. Along the route, you can admire the integrated archaeological site of a Roman villa, a settlement that was occupied between the 3rd century BC and the 4th century AD. As it is signposted, you can discover first-hand the exact place where the now well-known ‘Venus of Alicante’ was recently discovered, a beautiful marble head from Roman times that has become one of the city’s great archaeological finds.
Beyond its historical value, this setting is ideal for making the most of autumn walks. You can enjoy a ‘renaturalised’ landscape with extensive green areas, rest areas, street furniture and children’s play areas. In addition, the entire space is crossed by modern wooden walkways and pedestrian paths that extend the walk along the coast and connect you to the sea in an accessible and direct way.
2. Internationally renowned exhibitions and a great cultural agenda
It is the perfect time to discover the city’s museum circuit. The MARQ (Alicante Archaeological Museum) attracts international attention with major temporary exhibitions —such as «Gold and the Universe. Indigenous Knowledge of Colombia» and the exhibition «Rituals of Shepherds. Cannibalism and Burials in Cova de Randero»—, reaffirming its position as one of Europe’s leading archaeological institutions.
An essential part of this itinerary is the MACA (Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante), an avant-garde reference point in the heart of the Old Town, housing works by great 20th-century masters such as Eusebio Sempere, Picasso, Dalí and Miró. The cultural offering is completed by contemporary art proposals in unique spaces such as the Alicante Water Museum, which also houses the Garrigós wells and hosts evocative exhibitions such as «Hálito».
3. Venues with soul: the Teatro Principal, ADDA and Casa Mediterráneo, among others.
Alicante’s cultural autumn finds its temples of performing arts, music and cultural events in essential venues throughout the city. On the one hand, the historic Teatro Principal presents its autumn programme with major performances: from theatrical productions such as the one starring José Sacristán in «El hijo de la cómica» or Arthur Miller’s tragedy «Panorama desde el puente», to major opera events (La Flauta Mágica, Madama Butterfly), ballet performed by the Ballet of Kyiv, comedy from stand-up performers such as J.J. Vaquero, and the acclaimed international musical «El Fantasma de la Ópera».
For its part, the ADDA (Auditorium of the Provincial Council of Alicante) launches its prestigious 2026–2027 Symphony Season under the conceptual theme “Nature, Life and Love”, which this autumn features highlights such as the opening concert with Wagner’s «El anillo sin palabras» performed by ADDA·Simfònica Alicante, the visit of the Spanish National Orchestra performing Óscar Esplá’s «El sueño de Eros» alongside Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, the «Zen Garden» programme, a performance by the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra with the programme «Cielo y Tierra», and the major symphonic event «Natura» in November.
This varied offering is complemented by Casa Mediterráneo, located in the former Benalua Railway Station next to the port, which completes the agenda with film series, conferences, exhibitions and meetings dedicated to bringing the culture and reality of the countries bordering the Mediterranean closer to the public.
4. Interactive route with the Digital Scavenger Hunt «Alicante between Two Castles»
A fun, educational activity designed for all audiences, ideal for discovering the city while taking advantage of the mild autumn temperatures. Through a walking route of approximately 2 kilometres and 90 minutes, this treasure hunt takes you to 11 key points around the city, starting at the Central Market and ending at Las Cigarreras Cultural Centre. To participate, simply download the free mobile app «Alicante between Two Castles» (available in Spanish, English, French and German) and solve the challenges along the route. Once you have successfully completed all the questions, you will receive a numerical code that can be exchanged for a gift at the tourist office on the Explanada del Puerto.
5. Dreamlike sunsets and seaside gastronomy
Alicante’s mild autumn climate invites you to make the most of the city’s most emblematic outdoor spaces. Climbing up to Santa Bárbara Castle at this time of year allows you to explore the slopes of Mount Benacantil and La Ereta Park, offering a unique view over the bay and the province. For those who prefer a stroll among palm trees by the sea, El Palmeral Park offers an idyllic coastal oasis in the south of the city, with waterfalls and rest areas that are perfect for autumn days.
The experience is completed with Tabarca Island, the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community, perfect to visit at this time of year, exploring its walled enclosure or enjoying its crystal-clear waters, protected as Spain’s first Marine Reserve. To round off the experience, the beachfront terraces at El Postiguet and San Juan Beach remain open during the autumn months, allowing you to enjoy authentic Alicante-style rice dishes under the Mediterranean sun.
