5 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR ENJOYING THIS SEASON

Five tips for making the most of this summer!

Summer in Alicante is best enjoyed outdoors, when the sun goes down and the sea breeze sweeps through the city. If you want to make the most of the coast and make the most of the summer season just like a local, make a note of these five must-do activities for the coming months.

1. Experience the Bonfires and the International Fireworks Competition on the beach

Summer in Alicante officially kicks off in June with fireworks, music and fire. From 20 to 24 June, the city is transformed by the Hogueras de San Juan, its artistic monuments and the atmosphere of the mascletàs. But the magic continues straight afterwards: from 25 to 29 June, the evenings are reserved for the International Fireworks Competition. The perfect plan is to head to Postiguet beach to watch the fireworks display right by the sea.

2. Snorkelling in the coves of Cabo de la Huerta and water sports

To connect with the Mediterranean, the route along the nature trail at Cabo de la Huerta is an absolute must. Coves such as Cantalar or Cala Palmera are fantastic spots to put on your snorkelling goggles and explore the seabed first thing in the morning.

The adventure continues on the city’s beaches and in its harbours, where the range of water sports on offer allows you to experience the sea in a thousand different ways. Specialised schools in Alicante offer everything from dinghy sailing and windsurfing courses for all ages to the hire of paddle surfboards and kayaks, ideal for paddling along the coast at sunset. If you prefer something more relaxed, you can also hire a boat to sail around the bay and enjoy the coastline from a completely different perspective.

3. Major concerts, Cirque du Soleil and live performances by the sea

Alicante’s music and entertainment calendar comes alive in the summer, with something for everyone. The Rabasa exhibition centre (Area 12) is the venue for major tours featuring Dani Martín (27 June), The Black Crowes (8 July), Viva Suecia (11 July), Hombres G (29 August) and the festivals Love the 90s and I Love Reggaeton.

Added to these are the major live performances at the Plaza de Toros, which this summer hosts eagerly awaited events such as Antonio Orozco’s, and the programme of the ADDA, which turns July into the epicentre of music with a new edition of its iconic Fijazz festival, featuring major acts such as Niño Josele.

The magic comes to San Juan Beach with the huge big top of the Cirque du Soleil and its show KURIOS. As the grand finale, the Muelle Live series at the Muelle de Levante offers the perfect plan: live pop, indie and electronic music by the sea.

4. A cool retreat in the old town, a stroll through Santa Cruz and sunset views from the castle

Climbing up to Santa Bárbara Castle in the late afternoon is an unmissable experience, offering one of the best views of the bay bathed in the colours of the sunset. The perfect route up takes you through the old town. You can start in the San Roque neighbourhood and visit the Alicante Water Museum (home to the historic Pozos de Garrigós); these underground cisterns serve as an excellent natural climate refuge thanks to their cool interior. From there, head through the colourful, terraced streets of the neighbouring Santa Cruz district to our great fortress, Santa Bárbara Castle: from 17 June to 4 September it is open until 11 pm.

5. Cultural tour and local cuisine in the Traditional Centre

When the midday sun beats down, the city’s museums offer the best cultural refuge. Places such as the MACA in the historic centre, the MUBAG or the exhibitions at the MARQ are excellent stops. To round off the day, there’s nothing like enjoying some tapas around Plaza de Gabriel Miró or the Mercado Central, where you’ll find restaurants specialising in local produce: from authentic Alicante-style rice dishes and traditional salted fish to delicious artisan nougat ice cream.
