Photographic exhibition ‘Alicante, cerca del agua’ (Alicante, Close to the Water)
The Museum of Water of Alicante presents the exhibition ‘Alicante, cerca del agua’ (“Alicante, Close to the Water”), a show that offers a journey through the city’s visual memory by means of more than 50 previously unpublished stereoscopic photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The images come from a private collection and include ten pieces from the Alicante Municipal Historical Archive.
The narrative thread of the exhibition is water, understood as landscape, resource and a place for social interaction. Throughout the exhibition, visitors can discover fountains, beaches, historic bathing resorts and emblematic locations that reflect Alicante’s urban evolution and its path towards modernity.
The original photographs, produced on glass plates, have been carefully digitised for large-format display. The exhibition also features a striking large-scale image of the historic La Alianza bathing resort.
One of the most innovative aspects of the exhibition is the use of artificial intelligence animation techniques, which bring the archival images to life and transform historical photography into an immersive experience. This audiovisual treatment offers the public a new way of engaging with the past, allowing them to visually interact with Alicante as it was a century ago.
The project is led by collector Pedro Picatoste, together with a multidisciplinary team of designers and Fine Arts specialists responsible for the curatorship and audiovisual production. The experience is completed with explanatory texts on the history and culture of water, as well as a musical soundscape created specifically for the exhibition.
The exhibition is open to all audiences and can be visited until 6 March 2026 during the Museum of Water of Alicante’s regular opening hours.
